The status of residence of College Student is granted to persons who are residing in Japan in order to study or carry out research at an institution of higher education. Persons who have been granted this status of residence are not automatically entitled to engage in part-time work.

If you wish to engage in part-time work, as long as doing so will not affect your studies, you may apply to the Immigration Bureau for permission to engage in an activity other than that permitted under the status of residence of College Student. If permission is granted, working hours are limited to 28 hours per week, except during school holidays when up to 8 hours per day is permitted.

You MUST obtain this permission if you will receive financial remuneration for the work you wish to engage in. This applies even if you will be working for Waseda University (e.g. as an on-campus TA or RA). You may be subject to deportation, a fine, or imprisonment for engaging in any of the following acts: receiving any form of payment for work without first having obtained this permission; working in excess of the number of hours permitted; or performing work other than that permitted.
